Wymyslo to Bring Patients and Physicians Together

(Columbus, Ohio)—Ohio Academy of Family Physicians (OAFP) extends its congratulations to family physician Ted Wymyslo, M.D., in his appointment as director of Ohio Department of Health (ODH). The announcement was made by Gov. John Kasich at a press conference on Jan. 13.

“I am looking forward with great excitement to working with the team that Gov. Kasich has assembled to address the needs of Ohio. This team is embracing the governor’s call for transformation in health care, which he emphasized as he created the Office of Health Transformation by executive order,” said Wymyslo.

“In my role as ODH director, I will bring Ohio’s patients and physicians together to ensure quality health care for Ohio,” he continued.

A longtime OAFP member, Wymyslo is director of Family Medicine Dayton, Dayton, Ohio, and is one of OAFP’s representatives on Ohio’s Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) Education Advisory Group where he serves as the group’s chair, and was a driving force behind passage of H.B. 198, the Ohio PCMH bill.

Wymyslo has pledged to bring to his new leadership position his 30 years of experience as a practicing family physician, family medicine educator, and former residency program director at Miami Valley Hospital, Dayton.

“OAFP could not be more proud of Ted’s accomplishments in working with the legislature on health care reform. We feel his appointment as ODH director is the perfect next stepping stone for his continued work on bringing quality health care to all Ohioans,” said OAFP President Sarah Sams, M.D.

He has received many awards for his leadership including OAFP’s 2009 Torchlight Leadership Award for his commitment to transforming community practice and medical education to the PCMH model of care. Wymyslo was named Ohio Academy of Family Physicians Foundation Philanthropist of the Year in 2002 and American Academy of Family Physicians Foundation Philanthropist of the Year in 2003. He was also honored in 2006 with American Medical Association Foundation’s Pride in the Profession Award, and was the first recipient of Miami Valley Academy of Family Physicians Family Physician of the Year award.

Wymyslo and his wife, Janet, currently reside in Tipp City (45371) and have two grown daughters, Beverly (Danny) Breyman and Joanna.
