SMB PC & AV Rental

Got a short term project which might require computer rental equipment? has computers, tablets, iPads and more.

How To Get The Latest Tech Without Pay...

Moore’s Law states that the overall processing power for computers (i.e. laptops, tablets, smartphones, etc.) will double every two years. This has proven true since it was conceived back in the 60’s, and it has certainly proven to be a driving force of technological change in today’s society. Basically what I’m getting at is because technology progresses and changes so rapidly, there is a constant stream of technological devices being released by tech companies and it can be hard to stay ahead of the curve.

Whether you are part of a company that wants to “Wow” everyone at your next convention with the latest tech or you’re just interested in getting a hands-on experience with the latest and greatest devices for curiosity-sake, it can be hard to do this without breaking the bank. Maybe you’re an Apple fan who picked up the iPad Mini for its portability only to discover an even more portable iPad Air was released late last year. Or maybe you have always used Samsung or Windows devices but you want to really impress potential clientele at your next trade show with a sleeker Apple device. But you’re smarter now, you know that if you purchase the newest tech something better is bound to be released shortly after and you will be kicking yourself again. Luckily, there is a solution.

A company that has been in the technology rental industry for over 27 years just put up a new site: You can rent anything from the very newest iPads to the fan favorite iPad 2. Your problem of choosing between being behind the technological curve and emptying your wallet is over; enter: affordable technology rentals.

If you’re a consumer looking to try out the latest tech, this company will ship an iPad to you and you can ship it back once your rental period is up. If you’re a business, this company will deliver and set up the technology at your next trade show or event. They will even pack it up and take it away when your event is over; it doesn’t get much easier than that, does it?

While this company specializes in renting iPads, there are companies out there that offer rentals of other PC and AV equipment like laptops, projectors, sound equipment, desktops or even servers. So you can stay ahead of the curve by renting all of your technology needs.

A Startup SMB Tech Company 30 Years Ag...

by John Beagle

Tom Hornyak, founder of Micro Rental Service, Inc., a Pittsburgh-based technology rental firm celebrates 30 years in business this month. Congratulations Tom. No easy feat considering that only 37% of companies in the IT industry survive more than 4 years according to a University of Tennessee research report.

How did Tom get his SMB off the ground and why the technology rental industry?

Photo: Tom Hornyak, Owner Micro Rental Service, Inc.

Tom graduated from Penn State and passed his CPA exam on the first try and immediately went to work with one of the 'Big 8' public accounting firms.

So why six years later did Tom start a company that rented computers to business? Tom said, "The reason that I left public accounting was that I found out that I wasn't going to make partner as they weren't admitting new partners at the time. I had been an audit manager for about 6 years and I could have stayed as a principle but I decided it was time to leave. At the time I was the only one in the entire firm that had a computer, an IBM XT with a 10 gig. hard drive. I saw the potential in this new [computer rental] industry and decided to go out on my own."

"I saw the potential in this new industry and decided to go out on my own."

At first Tom was doing computer training and installing PC based accounting systems in other SMBs.

As the owner of a small business, Tom was responsible for just about everything, from selling, purchasing, managing, payroll, finance, everything. Hell, I even cut the grass in the summer and plowed the snow in the winter.

Tom explains that Micro Rental Service, a relatively small company by design as much as by circumstance. Although the Pittsburgh market isn't all that large, they have found a nice niche. Micro Computer Rentals, Inc. is the largest and oldest computer rental business in the Pittsburgh area.

When Tom started, he was doing a lot of PC training in Lotus 1-2-3 and WordPerfect. He had some out of town clients from his accounting days that requested that they come to Pittsburgh for him to train them.

They requested that Tom's company find a suitable space and rent some PCs for them to use for the training and they would pick up the cost. At that time, there were no companies renting PC's in the area or anywhere in the US for that matter.

Tom borrowed some money and purchased computer equipment for the training business. The rental business sprang from that.

One of MRS's first customers was Ticketron, the national ticketing company. Tom did a small deal for them at Pitt Stadium where they rented an IBM XT to connect to their ticketing machine. A few months later they requested that a couple more XT's be shipped to their main office in New York City. Tom tried to get out of the New York conrtact, suggesting that they could find someone in New York City to handle it. They told him that since they were so satisfied with his service in Pittsburgh, they wanted to use him nationwide. Over the next 4-5 years he had systems as far away as Jack Murphy Stadium in San Diego, the Milwaukee Bucks Arena, Florida, New Jersey, and Chicago. Those were the great rental days when the customer kept the equipment for years and years. This one customer helped me pay for my building and get my start in the rental business.

This month marks the 30th year in business for Micro Rental Service, Inc. Congratulations, Tom Hornyak!

Why my SMB Accepts The American Expres...

Since inception in 1987, has  always accepted the American Express card for payment. We also accept Visa, MasterCard, more recently Discover and now PayPal.

We not only accept the American Express Card (AMEX) , we encourage clients to use the American Express Card if they ever ask.

Q: Why would we want to accept a card that has a higher fee than Master Card or Visa?

A: Because of convenience to the client.

We are not here for our own good we are here to serve the client. If a client wants to use the American Express Card, then why even ask about MC/Visa? ....To save money? I hope not.

Saving money isn't a good enough excuse to dissuade a client from using a payment type. When a client asks one of our representatives, "Do you accept American Express," they respond, "we certainly do." That's much more effective than "no."

How do you talk someone into Visa without sounding chincy? Most business clients know it's more expensive to process AMEX charges than Master Card and Visa. They know you are being "Yugo" on them, not "Mercedes Benz" classy.

What's the cost savings you miss out on a sale because you are so parsimonious? Sometimes cutting costs, cuts sales too. Clearly an unintended consequence.

For many of our business clients, AMEX is the preferred method. When they find we accept their preferred method of payment they are more likely to do business with us.

We call that customer service 101. Provide the customer with the easiest way to make a business transaction.

Never hinder a sale with an excuse, that's not only bad service, it could be no service at all. Sometimes the American Express Card is the only card the client is authorized to use. Knowing we accept AMEX gives the client peace of mind. Just one more reason why they shop with us rather than our competition. We tell our clients to Relax! Enjoy your Next Business Event. We do everything to accommodate the client. Nothing to hinder the client wishes.

One last reason why accepts the American Express Card, I like being an American Express client and I've been one since 1993. One benefit I use is the American Express Sky Miles program. I fly to conferences and client sites for free or at a fraction of the normal cost. That saves my SMB thousands per year in airline expense. This easily justifies the $95 annual fee.
